yes, I realize that you could just buy a RAZR or whatever but if you swapped out those dirt bike tires for some DOT legal ones then this one is allowed on the highway, where the RAZR is not. Out west in the desert this thing would take you anywhere an ADV bike would, with less chance of trip ending falls and more camping gear to bring.

I dig it, but it needs some fenders. As much as I hate to say that, because it looks so good without them; you take one turn at speed and you’re in for a dirt-shower.

Still no lean. I also think it wouldn’t work well on trails. The rear wheel would always be in the tall stuff on double-tracks and both front wheels would always be in the tall stuff on single tracks.

That’s a good point.

I guess in my mind I don’t see a ton of that, as most of the touring I do isn’t on deeply rutted tracks.

its a worst of both roads situation. it tried to be both and ends up sucking at both of them. kind like ‘sport’ suvs. they really arent all that fast, and they cant do off-road anymore anyways. so whats the point?

That’s as may be, but it’s at the price of looking like a dumbass, and they’re too wide to do any trail riding, of which there’s loads out here.

You are also describing the extremely popular ADV bike category.

Why do I like that? I shoudn’t like it.
Like my dirty thoughts of a lifted Crosscabriolet on mud tires, I don’t understand my brain sometimes.

Wow, it wasn’t until seeing this image that I realized how much these just look like a SeaDoo on wheels.

It’s because its amazing. Stupid, but amazing.

More specifically, a SkiDoo

but ADV bikes are still single track, not multi track vehicles
thats like taking a actual SUV (like a land cruiser) yea, its going to suck on roads too. and its not as good as a rock crawler off road. but its much better off road then the sports SUV

That thing needs a snorkel.

Everything is a compromise, Are these trikes compromised? yeah, but they also bring to the table some pro’s as well as cons. Additional cargo, inherent stability, greater comfort. Its just a matter of what you need...I mean an 80 series is a terrible thing for light duty touring on account of its range and lack of power but it makes up for it in strength and capability. Its all tradeoffs. Aside from the track width issue, something like this would be an ideal light duty ADV touring machine. Lots of range, lots of capacity, lots of comfort and you wouldn’t need it to (or expect it to) tackle single track or serious terrain.
Just thinking about this last trip I did (where the ADV biker was hurt) this trike would easily go everywhere we did without complaint.

at LEAST one.

The front shape and seat are what make it a SeaDoo it for me. I grew up riding both, and the water version is what popped into mind first. Both apply, though.

Where I’ve ridden four-wheelers it’s always been either sand or double-track through the woods.
For mountain biking, it’s always single track. Hauling a double-wheel trailer sucks in that situation.

I can see both for sure.

oh man, hauling ANY trailer on a mountain bike sucks. People who MTB tour are nuts to me.

I haven’t gone beyond hauling the kids down trails when they were little. That’s when I realized that two parallel wheels are a bad thing on trails.
I do have aspirations about touring, but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I used to use their trailer to haul clothes into the office when I was commuting by bike regularly. The best part was cars who passed gave me a wide berth since they thought there were kids in the trailer.
In preparation for touring I converted their old trailer to a flatbed. This was a trial run. The cooler is filled with liquid refreshment for me and a few of my friends.

I have friends that tour, we met them in Glacier after the rode from Utah (oof) and I decided then that it wasn’t going to be for me.

I’d like to ride coast to coast. My wife insists that she come along - driving an RV. I think that would work out great. I’d have a support vehicle and a place to sleep every night. It ruins the idea of a self-supported ride and eliminates the need for a trailer, two things I thought were important to me, but may not be.

Well I can tell you that these friends of mine did NOT ride home. They went home with friends (me) and their wives.

I can’t blame them. If I rode the whole thing it would be Baton Rouge to coast to coast to Baton Rouge. That’s the equivalent of doing it twice. The coast to coast is going to take nine weeks. That should be enough.
